Contemporary Community Issues

Good morning friends!

We are starting on a community service learning project in our English and History classes.  Today we are writing to you to tell you more about our projects.

We want to start by telling you what service learning projects are in the United States.  Service learning projects are projects that help us to better our society and teach us how we can better serve our communities.  Service learning projects have classroom instruction, research and community volunteering activities.  Service learning projects give students a chance to really know and understand their community.  These projects also teach students a lot about themselves.   Students share what they learned with students, teachers, school leaders and community members so everyone is more aware.

Issues in Our Community

We have written a list of issues that we see in our own community.    They are:

Bad road conditions
Bad School building conditions
Poor school funding
Lack of student voice in education
Racial discrimination
Religious conflict
Bullying/Cyberbullying
Littering
Pollution
Eating Disorders
Lack of parks and recreational programs
Poverty
Drug/Alcohol abuse
Drunk driving
Crime
Violence
Child abuse
Animal abuse
Mental illness
Obesity/Childhood Obesity
Homelessness
Teen pregnancy
High school dropouts
Unemployment rate
Cancer
Sexism

What we have to do:  Proposal Plans

We must write a proposal plan for a project.  We have to first choose and issue and then research the issue and how it impacts our community.  We have to next design an action plan or a solution that we want to participate in.  We have to come up with what we want to change and then what our end result hopefully will be.

To write a proposal we start to make an outline for the  project. To make an outline we have a plan about what we will do and when, and we try to be as specific as possible with our writing. After writing the outline we have to get letters from the people and community groups we plan to work with. This will show everyone who reads our proposals that our projects have the support to be successful.

Service Plans

Volunteer plans in our community include, working in soup kitchens, animal refuge shelters, thrift clothing stores, volunteering in our school or local library, volunteering our time to school functions to help support our school committees, and  volunteering to spend time with our elderly family members and take care of them. Volunteer work happens a lot throughout our school. On May 19, we are having a day where we all go out in to our community and do volunteer work. Some classes are going around a picking up litter, others are reading to children at schools. This day will strongly unite our students to their community.

Other ideas include:

-Make informational flyers
-Talk to experts in the field
-Volunteer time helping in the community.
-Set up surveys, base project on surveys
-Give speeches
-Get speakers to speak on issue in front of others
-Start a club to get people/students involved in the subject ex. Start a self defense club to practice self defense
-Start a support group/refer people to a support group
